“The Best We Could Do” was chosen as an American Book Award, a Common Book for University of California Los Angeles and other colleges and universities, a National Book Critics Circle finalist and was an Eisner Award finalist. She said her parents went through a lot with starting over in a new country and raising a family in the United States. “The inspiration started as a revenge project toward all of the Vietnam war movies I grew up with.”īui’s parents were refugees. “It took me 10 years to write,” Bui said. CHICO - Author and illustrator Thi Bui is bringing her story to Chico State in April for the 2022-2023 Book in Common talk.īui, who came to the United States as a Vietnamese refugee, wrote and illustrated a graphic novel about her family in the years before, during and after the Vietnam war, called “The Best We Could Do.” The Book in Common is a shared community read designed to promote discussion and understanding of important issues facing the broader community.
